A lot of us were told by our moms
how they had to use their mouth to suck out mucus from our nostrils when we had
catarrh and the runny nose.
Sadly, most mothers today would rather be spared the disgust of having to do the same for their own kids.
Thanks to some innovators, moms don’t have to suck mucus out of their kid’s nostrils anymore!

What
is a Nasal Aspirator?
The nasalaspirator is one device that is far more efficient at removing mucus
from a stuffy little nose than the conventional mouth-to-nose sucking.
It consists of a nozzle that you position at the opening of the nostril, a long piece of soft tubing in the middle, and a bulb-like end to suck in air/mucus.

A nasal aspirator is a thing you should always keep in your
medicine/first-aid box. And if you have a kid, there should also be one
funny-looking baby aspirator to help it
distract and feel less awful during treatment and visits to the doctor. A
medical aspirator will help to remove mucus and other fluids from patient’s
body before the doctor comes. It is the least you can do for feeling better
without harming anyone.
How
do I use it?
Simply squeeze the air out of the
bulb of the aspirator to create a vacuum. Then gently insert the rubber tip
into one nostril. Slowly release the pressure on the bulb to suck out the
phlegm. Remove the nozzle and squeeze the bulb forcefully to expel the mucus
into a tissue. Wipe clean the tube using any baby disinfectant and repeat the
process for the other nostril.
Bear in mind that this should be a
gentle process. If you end up suctioning too aggressively, the nasal tissues
can become inflamed (or even bleed), which can make the congestion worse. If
your baby resists vigorously, let it go for a while and try again later.
Clean it well with warm, soapy
water or disinfectant after each use. Squeeze the bulb with the tip in the
soapy water to clean the inside, too. (Shake the soapy water inside the bulb
before squeezing it out.)
Rinse well by repeating the process
several times with clear warm water. Suspend the syringe, tip side down, in a
glass to dry.
It is safe, easy to use and a lot
more hygienic than having to suck your baby's nose with your mouth. It's also
very affordable for any mother.
