Getting a job in Nigeria today is itself a
real job! A lot of things a job seeker needs to know to get invited for an
interview, and eventually landing that dream job.
1
1. SPREAD YOUR CV
It is important that you send out your CV as
much as possible and as wide as possible to prospective employers.
The 80/20 rule
says that 80% of your results are likely to come from 20% of your efforts. This
means if you send out your CV 100 times, you are more likely to get feedback 20
times. So sent out your CV more!
Never ignore the power of
referrals. If you desire a dream job in a particular company, don't be too shy
to ask someone you know who works there if there might be an opening and
request a referral.
Statistics show that companies are more likely to recruit
people who were referred to them by a staff.

3. BE SOCIABLE
When in search of a dream job, as much as you
can, apart from making connections with people on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, twitter, email, etc), do your best to connect physically with people.
Attend
social functions, parties, conferences, weddings, etc, introduce
yourself to people, get their contacts and where possible, give yours. You
never know who might be of help in getting you your dream job
4. UPDATE YOUR CV
4. UPDATE YOUR CV
You cannot hope to land your dream job when you
still have that your old crappy CV from 1955!
Check out new CV formats; update
your skills, experiences, abilities and preferences. Tailor your CV to suit you
preferred company, industry or job.
5. VISIT YOUR PREFERRED COMPANIES
The saying goes that “if the mountain will not
come to Mohammed, Mohammed will have to go to the mountain”; If your preferred
company will not give you a phone call or respond to your emails, perhaps a
visit to their office or website and dropping your CV might help.
Success doesn't always come to you, you go to where success is.

You never can tell where or when you might meet
your prospective employer. It might be in church, at a social event or right on your street!
It’s important you always dress properly and look good as this will
most likely improve your chances of being seen by a prospective employer.
. 7. ACQUIRE PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
Most employers today look out for employees that
go the extra mile to learn some extra skill, update their knowledge with some
professional certification or job-specific skills that add value to their
bottom-line.
A lot of companies in Nigeria today prefer to
post their job openings online and sometimes through popular job sites.
Do well
to regularly check top job sites for latest openings and apply immediately.
9. USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO YOUR ADVANTAGE:
It’s a digital world and social media is key to
landing your dream job even in Nigeria today! Keep your social media profiles
professional, decent and visible; avoid posting unnecessary trivia and nudity.
Some employers today view your social media pages before they consider hiring.
You never know who might view your Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter profile and
give you a call.
. 10. BE DELIBERATE:
Lastly, when in search for a job,
be deliberate with everything: making friends; introducing yourself at events;
speaking up in gatherings or groups; getting noticed at functions; taking
leadership roles in social or religious communities; etc.
Best of luck with your job hunt!
